Altarum Institute is seeking a Web Developer/Usability Specialist for a 6-month contract with The Emergency Preparedness and Response Web team within the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This position will participate in CDC's emergency communication response. Our mission is to get timely, accurate, credible, and actionable health information to decision-makers (including individuals, families, communities, policy makers, and clinicians) so they can take action to save lives and minimize morbidity and mortality
The Emergency Web team is part of CDC's Emergency Communication System (ECS), which integrates emergency-related communication activity across CDC; ensures the execution of coherent risk communication strategies; translates CDC's science for diverse audiences; disseminates tailored, consistent messages through multiple channels to achieve maximum outreach; and serves as CDC's liaison to federal/state/local partners in coordination of emergency-related health messages nation-wide.
In this fast-paced environment, you will collaborate on Web and new media projects. During this internship, you will gain experience in all aspects of Web development and user-centered design for Web and multimedia and work with a multi-disciplinary team.
You will be the Web lead and Content coordinator for the CDC Responder Resiliency Network Web site, charged with improving the look and functionality of this Web site to better meets the needs of its target audience. This Web site is intended for the family members and loved ones of staff CDC deploys to the field and contributes to the resiliency of CDC's emergency responders and their families

Responsibilities:
Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:
? Design and update Web site. Develop and edit graphics.
? Work with team to determine target audience needs, evaluate success of the project, and identify areas for improvement.
? Meet regularly with subject matter experts and health communication specialists to identify content needs and goals.
? Conduct gap analysis of current Web site and competitive reviews of other Web sites, products, and services.
? Structure technical and scientific information to best leverage the Web medium.
? Design and conduct user testing. Analyze and report results.
? Monitor Web analytics and identify problem areas with current Web site.
? Utilize a range of software: Adobe Dreamweaver, Adobe Flash, Adobe Fireworks and/or Photoshop, BeyondCompare, Omniture, Adobe Photoshop, User Zoom, Backtweets, Radian6, Microsoft Office, etc.
Qualifications:
The ideal applicant will have the following:
? Completed a B.S. or currently completing an M.S. or Ph.D. in Human-Computer Interaction, Human-Centered Computing, Interactive Media, Digital Media, Computer Science, or related field; or 5 or more years experience in related field.
? At least basic knowledge of Section 508 accessibility requirements for Web-based systems and multimedia products.
? Experience with Adobe Dreamweaver, Adobe Flash, and Adobe Fireworks and/or Photoshop.
? Knowledge of Web and usability metrics (e.g. page views, time on site, success rate, time on task, clickstream, satisfaction, etc.), usability test design, usability heuristics, and interaction design principles.
? Strong communication (verbal, written, listening, and presentation) skills.
